What You Encounter at NYFW

Friday, September 12, 2014 /

Oh New York Fashion Week, you look so glamorous through the Instagram filters and Hyperlapse videos. This past Wednesday, I had the amazing opportunity to attend the Betsey Johnson show at Lincoln Center. And within the short yet glorious hour and a half I was there many, many things happened. I can summarize my experience with the following things one must encounter in the battlefield that is called #NYFW:

Mean Girls of Fashion Week: I spot a group of girls in hot pink dresses in front of me walking off the 1 train, and so it begins. The one in a faux fur vest (yes, fur in the 80 degree weather) complains about the heat and trips up the stairs in her sky high stilettos. She then makes awkward eye contact with me and glares after realizing I saw this embarrassing mishap. While this happens, I also accidentally stomp on some innocent mans flip flop. I said sorry, but I really just wanted to say 'Dude, watch it - this is the Lincoln Center stop and we are all clearly *VERY* important girls taking the subway to Fashion Week because we're all interns who can't afford an Uber.'

People Fake Complimenting You: I finally take my seat trying to pretend I'm not sweating like crazy after having to take 2 trains from SoHo to be on time. Then some guy in a hot pink blazer says to me "Oh my god, I love your jacket!" - I said thank you, but I couldn't help but feel like he totally just Regina George-d the fuck out of me. I started to regret not saying 'Thanks, it was my Mom's in the 80's!' so we could've bonded like Damian and Janis Ian.

Eating Becomes a Sin: The show was running late which meant I wasn't going to have time to grab lunch before heading back to my internship to glamorously fold clothes. I remembered that there were champagne gummy bears and a box of 3 bite-sized Melissa's Cupcakes in the gift bag. I keep eyeing both, thinking they make viable lunch options. As I go to grab my gummy bears like any classy adult would do, Christina Milian sits down in the row in front of me and the cameras starts to flash. I think I've gone blind and start to pray I'm not in the background of her perfect glamour shot eating a gummy bear with a double chin.

Networking Turns Into Therapy: It started off as a simple conversation after complimenting this girls sweater but before you know it she was spilling out all her dreams and aspirations telling me how sick she was being stuck in the wrong career. I smiled and chatted but I really just wanted to say 'Honey, you know this isn't group therapy...are you lost?'

Realizing You're Not Cool Enough For Street Style: I can't say I WON'T be in therapy for another year because no one asked for my picture. It's fine, I'll face the facts: my ASOS black dress was nothing to write home about and pretending I had a bra on by hiding in my leather jacket wasn't very Kate Moss of me. After this realization and self-esteem depletion, I sat on the subway eating my gummy bears in the corner wondering why the hell I wasn't born with Kendall Jenner's legs.

See you next year NYFW,

XO

10 Things We Loved This Week

/

Congrats, Rebel girls! We made it through another week! Time to relax and recap all the things we loved this week!

1.     iPhone 6
It’s here! On Tuesday, Apple revealed its latest creation – the iPhone 6 AND iPhone 6 plus, AND the long awaited  iWatch. Job well done, Apple! Pre-order starts today and shipping begins September 19th!

2.     Kate Middleton & Prince William expecting baby No. 2!
Get ready for Royal Baby Fever all over again! The adorable Prince George is going to be a getting a brother or sister (hint: Prince Charles is hoping for a girl.) We know Kate had a tough first pregnancy, so wishing you all the best, Duchess!

3.     Kim Kardashian Ice Bucket Challenge
Kim Kardashian finally accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge from Ellen DeGeneres, and in true Kim form, she selfied her way through it all. Wonder if that selfie will make the cut in her book, Selfish?

4.     Ryan Phillippe Turns 40
Happy 40th Birthday Ryan Phillipe! That’s right ladies, the heartthrob from Cruel Intentions turned 40 this week. Still hunky as ever, he took to twitter and instagram changing his bio to “older gentleman” and captioning “I maybe 40- but I’m still as fun as two 20 year olds.” (We bet you are, Ryan!)

5.     23 Jump Street Officially Happening
Looks like we get to keep laughing at duo Channing Tatum & Jonah Hill. 23 Jump Street is in the works! With 22 Jump Street grossing $320 million at the box office, it only seem right to keep going. Keep an eye out in 2016!

6.     Britney Spears on Tindr
Last month, Britney Spears announced she had split from long-term boyfriend, David Lucado. Pal, Jimmy Fallon, came to the rescue by creating her a profile on dating site, Tindr. Spears joked that she was “thrilled” to be a part of the dating app. Good luck, Brit!

7.     Michael Kors NYFW
EVERYTHING about NYFW is loved. BUT of course, Michael Kors’ show was one to stand out. He showcased the beauty of women in casual, laid-back, yet classic silhouettes. Stunning – is all  I have to say.

8.     Beyonce and Jay-z Crash a Wedding
This lucky bride had some unexpected wedding guests. Bey and Jay dropped in on this Italian wedding in Portofino, Italy, taking a break from their vacation. What split? While vacationing in Italy for Bey’s bday, the two seem as happy as ever.

9.     Miley Cyrus & Jeremy Scott
Miley Cyrus debuted her first art installation, “Dirty Hippie,” at Jeremy Scott’s show during NYFW. Miley made all her creations herself and the collection feature brightly colored sculptures and “junk” that made her happy. Hmm, would you buy?

10. Remembering 9/11
Most importantly, we celebrated the 13th anniversary of 9/11. On September 11, 2001, The World Trade Center was attacked, losing the lives of many. To this day, we stand united and our country has become as strong as ever. Each anniversary gives us the chance to pay tribute to the terrible tragedy that occurred. #NeverForget

Fashion Week Best Dressed

Thursday, September 11, 2014 /

Its that time of year again. New York Fashion Week has begun, and the style has never been better. In some cases, the people in the front row look better than the people on the runway. I have always loved seeing what fashion week attendees will wear to the shows, it is as entertaining as the shows themselves most of the time (except Moschino, nothing is more interesting than a Moschino fashion show FACT). I have selected my top five fashion week attendees based on their inherent ability to look FABULOUS.

Jamie Chung in BCBG
My giiirl Jamie Chung was looking head to toe amazing in BCBG Max Azria. I love her shorts and crop kimono combination. I also love love love the fringe, it adds a festival-themed edge to the look.

Jessica Hart in TOME
TOME is a brand that I have become obsessed with recently. And to top it off, Jessica Hart is someone I have become obsessed with recently. Talk about a match made in heaven. The bright pink top paired with the pattern skirt is an easy and relaxed way to look chic. Topped off with nude shoes and an adorable clutch. Jessica wins again.
Rihanna in Adam Selman
Is fashion week a competition? ABSOLUTELY. RiRi is certainly my champion this year. This all white Adam Selman ensemble is feminine and pretty, but still manages to look beyond stylish. Bow down to the queen, Rebel gals.
Chiara Ferragni in Versus Versace
My favourite blogger of the moment (and of all time realistically) rocking the most fun dress I have seen all week. Versus Versace is known for its crazy prints, and thankfully this awesome dress is no exception. I love that the look is topped off with KILLER heels. You go girl.

Olivia Palermo in Carolina Herrera
This would not be a best-dressed list if Olivia Palermo didn’t make an appearance. She can do no wrong. Seriously. Only Olivia could wear all grey and look this cool. The sunglasses and fringe bag successfully top off this fantastic outfit. Olivia...lets do lunch some time?

Enjoy fashion week gals. Until next time!

Monday Mantra: Embrace The Change

Monday, September 8, 2014 /

Rewind my life two years ago, I was a high school senior with the dreams of becoming a college soccer player. During this phase of my life I could never see myself losing passion for soccer and my ultimate goal of becoming a kindergarten teacher. Fast forward to my present day situation, I am currently enrolled in the textiles and merchandising program at the University of Wyoming, have a relationship with my love for blogging, anything and everything, and usually choose to buy clothes over food. In just two short years my whole entire way I wanted to live my life changed. Realizing that my passion in life changed from wanting to become a college athlete to becoming a creative soul with the biggest desire in the world to become part of the fashion industry. Thinking back now about how different I have become is absolutely crazy. Everyone in some point in their life has been faced with that fork in the road that makes them choose between staying the same or changing to grow into the person you want to become. I am sure after hearing about the path that I choose to journey along you can relate. Chances are if you looked back three, two, or even just a year ago you would not be the same person that you are today.  Maybe you changed your address, favorite Starbuck’s drink, or your ultimate goal in life, whatever it was it has shaped you into a different person. Now don’t get me wrong change can be a difficult thing at first but if you think about your future and what is best for you it might not be such a bad thing.  Adjusting is the hardest part but when you think ahead to what you want to do with your future change is necessary. It is an ingredient needed to reach your dreams. Without change you wouldn’t become the person who you want to become. Whether it’s starting college, a new job, or a relationship you should greet change with a smile and in return you might gain something in your life you cannot believe you were living without before. So this week I want you to embrace the change in your life whether it’s getting a new roommate or chopping off your beloved locks of hair. Change is an apart of life and who wants to be the same braced-faced person you were in high school?

Let’s all fight the Monday blues together and embrace all the change that is to come!

XO,
Alex

TGIF: 10 Things We Loved This Week

Friday, September 5, 2014 /

Okay, We’ll admit...we liked A LOT about this week, early morning alarms and Joan Rivers’ death (RIP WE LOVE YOU) most definitely not included. Yet, somehow, we narrowed it down to 10, just in time for the weekend...ahh, those words never sounded so good.

1. Happy 33rd Birthday Beyonce!
The Queen celebrated her 33rd birthday Thursday and every girl in the world said a special prayer to be that kind of *flawless* at 33. We all know it’s not likely, but a girl can dream, right?!? From the Rebel Redefined team, Happy Birthday Bey!
2. Like OMG, The truth behind the #PSL was exposed...and every white girl instantly left the Starbucks line.
This week, an article by Food Babe began circulating that exposed what is really in the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte. This was shocking news for the die hard fans who swear by the seasonal drink. ICYMI, there is NO pumpkin in the pumpkin spice latte, people. Along with that horrific news, the drink also contains harmful ingredients like Monsanto Milk, Class IV Caramel Color, and more sugar than you’d ever imagine. Starbucks, shame on you. You are shady and are the Mcdonalds of coffee. Thanks to Free People, there is a easy and healthy alternative so you can still enjoy your  yummy PSL.

    3.  Emma Stone and Beyonce reveal their short new do’s, and we drool.
Lately, you can’t go anywhere without seeing a girl with a super cute bob. Of course, Emma Stone and Beyonce not only got their own version of this cut, but they’re completely rocking them out. Now, pause, and go call your hairdresser. Yep, we. just. read. your. mind.

4.WhoWhatWear opened our eyes to a special gift from the gods– raw denim.
We all know that the struggle is real when it comes to finding that perfectly fitting pair of jeans. and i mean, REAL. like “trying on 50 pairs and crying in a dressing room while convincing yourself that jeans just aren’t necessary anyway” real. Just when we were about to give up and swear by the magic of soft pants, WhoWhatWear gave us raw denim. The trick to raw denim is to soak them in warm water, hang them up to dry, put them on while they are slightly damp and BOOM, let them form to your body. To read the article and see where you can find these gems, read it here

5. Three words: Ellen Degeneres, Instagram, Anaconda. Need we say more?
Our favorite funny gal, Ellen, posted a picture on her Instagram Thursday paying a LARGE tribute to Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda video. We love you, Ellen, and we kinda hope you re-create the entire video.

6. Sam Smith Covered Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car”
BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge has been known to bring in some great artists, doing some great covers, (may we remind you of that Banks-covering-an-Aaliyah-song perfection from the spring?) and this “Fast Car” rendition is no exception. Check out the video and try to think of one song that Sam Smith wouldn’t sound good covering. Stumped? Same. ~*LoVe HiM*~

7. It’s A Girl! Scarlett Johansson Had Her First Baby!
Rose Dorothy was born in New York on Saturday and ScarJo is now a mother for the first time! Congrats to you and your dreamy french journalist fiancé.

8. In A Totally James Franco Move, He Went Bald And Documented It In Selfies.
In case you don’t follow James Franco on Instagram, we highly suggest it. The hilarious actor posted pictures of his newest ‘do, which he did for a role in his new film “Zeroville”.  Our thoughts on the new hairless Franco? We kind dig it, mostly just because we kinda dig Franco...no matter what weird/crazy thing he’s up to.
9. R-Patz Has A New Boo, And We Approve.
Robert Pattinson has been spotted with a new girl, and rumors are buzzing that the two are dating. FKA Twigs, new up-and-coming UK singer and It Girl, is the special lady who caught the gorgeous actor’s eye. All we can do is breathe a sigh of relief that the K-Stew drama is over for Rob. (Does anyone else suddenly hear Ariana Grande singing Break Free?) We hope this one’s here to stay because let’s be honest...they look really, really good together.

10.  The Little Rascals Re-Created Their Iconic Movie Poster. D’Awww....
One of the most beloved movies of our childhood celebrated their 20th anniversary in this adorable way. The entire cast showed up to re-create the original photo that we all know and love. We’ll forever love the film and we’ll forever write notes like “Dear Darla, I hate your stinking guts”.

What did you love this week? Tell us in the comments below and whether you decide to go bald, make your own PSL, or star in your own version of “Anaconda”– have a fabulous weekend!

Elena
