Rebel Book Club: Vacation Reads

Wednesday, July 9, 2014 /

While we all long for summer vacation, often times it ends up being a little more underwhelming than anticipated. We all have our ways of combatting the seemingly never-ending boredom, and my solution has always been books. I love to read — in fact, I basically buried my nose in a book at the age of 7 and I’ve never fully reemerged. So if you find yourself identifying with the nerdy bookworm in me, these books are for you. Summer boredom will soon be a thing of the past.

It by Alexa Chung
This book is for anyone looking for a light, fun read. If you love fashion and you love Alexa Chung (who doesn’t?), this is the perfect book to keep you company while laying out on the beach. Though there is no deep message or even a real story, it’s still possible to get lost in Chung’s witty charm and impeccable style with this entertaining book. Plus, it doesn’t get any cuter than that light pink canvas cover.

If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things by Jon McGregor
If you are a writer or just simply a lover of words, you won’t be able to put this book down. Mysterious and beautiful at the same time, this novel is not for those looking for nonstop excitement. However, its deliberative slow nature allows time for full appreciation of the lilting prose of Jon McGregor. Though it’s a short read, you can’t help but fall deep into the world he creates with every word he writes.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
In light of her recent death, I believe everyone who hasn’t read a book by this remarkable woman should do so in her honor. Not only was Maya Angelou a strong, courageous woman, she was an amazing writer, and her compelling stories bring out every emotion from pure joy to crushing heartbreak.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
If you should find yourself on a long vacation with abundant time on your hands, I would suggest that you read this book. Being that it’s my favorite book of all time, I may be a bit biased; however, that does not stop me from recommending it to every person I know. This is another book for those with a deep appreciation of words — it is not light by any means, and there is a great possibility that you will shed many tears while immersed in this enchanting yet sorrowful novel. It is truly a story that steps on your heart, but it leaves the most beautiful footprints.

What is on your summer reading list?! Let us know!
